Researcher of the Week: Marissa Young

This week we look at a young (pun intended), but very influential orca researcher from Chicago, Illinois.

Name: Marissa Young

Current Location: Chicago, Il
Research Interests: Vocabulary of Orcas, dolphin language and reproduction
Research Highlights: In 2006 she published along with Dr. Harry Manel a surprising paper in the Journal of Sea Mammal Behavior that orca's have a much wider vocabulary than most biologists expected. This lab to special recognition at the 2007 Sea Mammal Language Conference in Austin, Texas.

Life Biography: Marissa attended an all girls Catholic school throughout childhood and majored in music at Columbia. Her interested in sea mammal language developed while she was working at Sea World in Orlando, Florida.
